It looks organized.

When people picture an apiary, they often imagine a long row of identical beehives standing neatly side by side.
It looks organized.
But it may not be the best arrangement for the bees.
More than half a century ago, researchers began studying how the layout of an apiary affects the way honey bees find their way home. They discovered that worker bees regularly enter the wrong colony — a behaviour known as drifting. This becomes significantly more common when many similar hives are placed close together in long, uniform rows.
Drifting is a natural part of a bee’s life.
The problem is that drifting can also move Varroa mites, viruses and other pathogens from one colony to another. Over time, it can alter colony populations, with some colonies gaining foragers while others lose them.
Research has shown that drifting can be reduced through simple, nature-inspired design.
Not with technology.
But by making it easier for bees to recognize their own home.

These findings closely reflect the work of honey bee biologist Thomas D. Seeley. Wild honey bee colonies are rarely found standing close together. Instead, they are naturally dispersed across the landscape, each using distinct landmarks to locate its nest. This natural spacing is believed to reduce the spread of parasites and diseases between colonies.
That is why we do not arrange our apiaries simply for convenience.
We try to arrange them in a way that respects how honey bees have lived in nature for millions of years.
Perfect symmetry may please people.
For bees, finding their way home matters far more.
Nature has spent millions of years refining its own solutions.
Our role is not to improve them.
Our role is to understand them.
That is why our hives are not placed where they are most convenient for us. We place them where they help bees navigate, orient themselves and live a little closer to the way they always have.
Not every decision is visible.
But many of them make a difference.
